Frost! Feb 04, 2011
Activity-icon-status

So, I was wrong when I thought we were out of danger of frost.  The past week has given us several frosty mornings, some of the coldest of the year.  The poly house should have protected the seeds that were just sown, but germination is sure to be slowed down by this cold.

Another great CA farm! I might recommend for some fun reading "Farm City" by Novella Carpenter.  A great read for someone with your diversity in the garden.

We built this poly house for our spring propagation.  It gets nice and hot and humid during the day, perfect for germinating seeds and rooting cuttings.  In the summer when its hot we will have t... (more)
Warm season veggies. Jan 29, 2011

Planted our warm season seeds in trays in the sweat tent.  Heirloom tomatoes, nasturtiums, cucumbers, zinnias, beets, peas.  We held off on sowing anything out of the tent as we could still get a frost.

Lettuce update! Dec 15, 2010
Activity-icon-status

Well, despite my fears about the texture of our lettuce bed we have a bounty of salad greens!!  They are doing great.  We harvest in a cut and come again style and eat salad several times a week.  We've even got Milo eating a bowl of lettuce as a snack - amazing!

I was looking at the lettuce bed, and I think that our seedlings would have preferred a finer seed bed.  The mulch looks a bit course for their delicate stature.  It will be interesting to see if it affects the overall success of our greens crop.

Great photo and makes these guys look elegant, even!  Silly question: is the color of fowl specific to the species?  In other words, are these/could these be the same "race"?

We've started pulling the last of the tomato and pepper plants.  Harvested the last of the onions and are preparing beds for the fall planting.  Holding off on starting anything though as its been so darned hot here!  Over 100 F most days, just trying to keep the chickens cool and waiting for fall.

What a nice big bunch of grapes; you must have some good healthy vines. What variety of grape are they? Are they just for snacking? Did you try your hand at wine making or anything other preserving? Are th... (more)
