Yesterday afternoon, I finished tilling the 15' x 15' patch by hand with a pitchfork. My goal is to add my organic compost and bumper crop and plant carrots and beets by the end of the weekend. I'm still plotting out the organization of the garden and hoping that I picked enough of the shale out of the soil to make easy growth...

On a lark, I planted tomatoes that a woman gave me last year, claiming that none of her heirlooms sprouted. My risk has paid off, because all of my tomato seeds are now baby plants! These unlikely varieties are Eva Purple Ball, Evergreen, and Black Prince
