There are seriously not enough cool hours in the day to do all that needs to be done in the garden. The Texas summer heat has now descended upon us. 90's every day and even though we haven't hit 100 yet, it sure seems like it. I'm thinking about switching over to hoop houses and only gardening during the fall, winter and spring!... ...see more
| Cucs look good ... sure the tomatoes are also. I can almost say the same heat here in Alabama - not quite up the 90's but close and I can't stand to get out in heat like I used to. |
Yes, the heat is not fun for me either. We have been in the mid 70's to low 90's for the past few days. The 70's has been wonderful... but the 90's are killing me. Mosquitoes a... more » |
You are right about the mosquitoes! They are ravenous up here this summer, and the recent rains have not helped. The sun gets a certain spot in the sky every evening and they come out with a&nb... more » |

We had another successful day at the Farmers Market in Denison, Texas this morning. It's so much fun to see how delighted people are to get produce they know is fresh and that hasn't been sprayed with pesticides. I took a cooler about 2/3 full of nice small cucumbers and several people bought a bunch. I only came back with a... ...see more
| Congrats on your success! I am contemplating doing the same this summer. We have a farmer's market here in town. A couples seminar....running it or taking part in it? Intriguing. |

Lots of green pears fell off the trees in last night's storm. Anyone have any good ideas on what to do with them?

| bake them then drizzle with balsalmic and honey mmm! or slice them all up and let them macerate in some vinegar and then eat with blue cheese in a salad! |

Last night we had one of the worst thunderstorms ever with lots of wind, driving rain and almost continual lightening flashes! Result was that we didn't get a very good night's sleep and a tornado shelter has moved up a rung on the priority ladder. I woke up early to survey the damages. When I looked out the window, I noticed... ...see more

This is my 4th year of gardening commercially. I use natural pest controls and organic fertilizer in my raised beds. This year I am trying out the Mittleider method of gardening in some of my beds. The production is supposed to be 5 or 6 times greater than using traditional gardening techniques. This method is the best of organic, hydroponic and in-ground gardening all in one. I grow lots of varieties of heirlooms in my garden.
