It's a female, most likely (no boxing gloves).  I really appreciate you showing off the little critters.

The plant looks like it blooms from the bottom up - and that you'll have many more weeks of blossom, especially on the center stalk. Love that!

Yes, they bloom from the bottom up.  They bloom for many weeks in late summer.

I'm glad we  have this moist spot.  I didn't know what to do with it at first, but am finding ... more »

What a marvelous picture.  A darner, yes?  Look at that coloration!!! Please let me know if that has a common name in your neck of the woods.   Mind if I re-post on your Entomolo-garden?
ssgardengirl replied about 2 years ago
Thank you!  Yes, I think it's a green darner - that's what we call 'em here.  Please feel free to repost.

As slick as the surface of the plant looks, the little guy seems to have little trouble holding on.  You wonder why he is there since it seems like slim pickings for bitesize snacks.  Does this i... more »

Pretty early in the season for so much pollen.  Happy plants where you are.  Are those squashes?
ssgardengirl replied about 2 years ago
Yep -  red kuri squash to be exact. It's defintely early for so much pollen - the photo is from last year.  (uploaded just for you, since you were asking about insect photos. :)

Yep - that is the question.  You should ask Steely Dan.  :)  (Hope you get that reference).  I recommend you hang on to katydid's until dusk.  They are wonderful to watch "chirp." Each species has it's own unique style.

I admit it - I'm old enough to remember Katy Lied and Dr. Wu. :O    We've never seen them chirp, but we hear them from midsummer through the first hard freeze.  Just when the c... more »

Nice bug song memory ... and that was a band to live - and dance - by!

You got my day started just right.

So glad you saw that Tara!  Thanks for the link - I'll check it out.  Hummingbirds visit our garden, but they're so camera-shy!  I've gotten a couple of decent pics of hummers at my mom's, but so far a good shot in our garden eludes me.

Aha!  I tried to ID this for a while - guess I was barking up the wrong tree trying to figure out what kind of dragonfly it was.  Thanks for the info!

Thank you Emmet!  I have a few pretty cool bug and spider pics.  I'll dig around my files and add a few.

Wow, your garden is so green, it's indulgent just to look at the pictures!  It looks like a wonderful place to relax.
