I tried last year.  But the season wasn't long enough.  I started them indoors too.  I was going back and forth about them coming back in the Spring.  They looked pretty gone this winter.  And now i moved so I won't know but I think I'll try them in the perennial garden again this year.  The plants were strong and did really well in the heat, they just never produced anything. (less)

We have had a bad 2 years of grasshoppers/crickets too.  I've read that they go in cycles...  There are some organic treatments that you can put out and they eat it and it kills them - something the only hurts that bug...  but you have to reapply it after any rain (which hasn't been much of a problem this year thats for sure) - but I still hate putting anything down if I don't need to - they say the overall BEST control is chickens...  so I've been letting the girls free range instead of spending time in the chicken tractor.  Its pretty funny when you see them chasing one across the lawn!!!  =)  Hopefully they help and keeps the population down next year...  its sometimes hard to tell if my damage in the garden is hopper or other bugs...  those guys can munch A LOT!   Good luck... and your right that was kind of gross with THAT many all in one little area.  I know when I'm mowing its gross cause they jump.fly up at ya all the time...  I wear safety glasses if its not sunny out and always keep my mouth shut!  =)
