| I've never even thought about sugar canes as a garden crop; what kind of conditions do they like? |
Ha! I have NO idea. I found the seeds on eBay and thought why the heck not. I really didn't expect them to grow, but they popped right up! I was thinking about putting them in containers since they do... more » |
| Oh, funny! Why not? Garden experiments are always fun - it will be fun to see how your sugar canes do! |

OMG - the amount mucus that is pooring out of my face has GOT to be a world record. Im sorry, I don't mean to be too gross, but cripes... just how much mucus can one body produce. This spring allergy season is kicking my ass. All I want to do is lay down with a tissue surgically implanted in my nose. I can stop sneezing. Shoot,... ...see more |

Ah, thanks! I've been neti-potting every day, taking lots of immune building supplements, and getting chiropractic adjustments. Thats how I deal with it. As I sneeze all over my keyboard for the hundredth ... more » |

Phew, what a windy day in the city. My allergies are insane.

I guess it is hard to do, not because we do not know what to do,but because we are so trained to "need" some very "not good for you" foods. I am making an effort, and I mean I am going to do it, to e... more » |

How do you choose what you are growing each year? For me, I personally grow things that are way expensive at the market or things that are hard to find, like fennel, roma tomatoes, okra and artichokes! Shoot, fennel is $4 a pound here. The way my family eats, it would be cheaper to buy steak! And finding a good (affordable)... ...see more |
| If I could learn to grow one thing that we use tons of and I have to buy I'd choose mushrooms. All kinds. We love them. |
| Yeah, that would be sweet. I tried my hand at shiitake logs but I they didn't do so hot. I guess you need to have tons of them to be worth it. |
Not a hard choice here. We grow anything and everything we like to eat. We try to grow enough to last for the entire fall, winter and spring. We freeze, can and dehydrate all we can. ... more » |

It's been a busy week of up-potting, bed prepping and general clean up. My husband will get his basement back soon - I stole it for seeding.

Oh man... I fell asleep on the couch early last night... missed the freeze warning and woke to frost on everything. Everything I did cover :(
|
| 36! Everything had a heavy frost... of course hubby knew and didn't tell me... argh! |
| Sad :( Let us know how things look once it starts to warm up. I've got my fingers crossed for you! |
| This frost seems to be sneaking up on us here too :( my neighbor has an entire garden planted already...his backyard is COVERED in blankets. Hopefully this was the last hard freeze. |

Ha! I called it - snow in April. More snow than we had all of March!

We had that about a year ago as well :( Luckily this year it's just been a couple of nights of frost for us. I should expect it in Minnesota, but it's still hard after an early start to spring.... more » |

What the heck? How in the world do you sow the tiniest seeds after they have been soaked? They keep sticking to everything!
|
| With carrot seeds (the smallest seeds I soak), I pour them over a paper towel and let them dry for a minute before I plant them. I haven't noticed any drawback to this brief drying, and they're much easier to handle. |
Thanks! I never thought of that, and I'm going to go try that right now! |
| Look at how this roma is GLOWING! So happy to be outside. Apr 08, 2012 | |

| It really neat how hairy they are when they are so young |
| I was noticing mine this weekend, too - love how the little hairs make them "glow" in the sunlight. |
It turns out - even the plants are not vegans!!

There are few things in life that can keep my attention the way gardening does.
|
| I agree! |
| When I come up from my basement greenhouse I am blown away to see 2-4 hours have ticked away. Especially since I usually go down there for some other reason than tending babies. LOL |

About 6 years ago, we started on a journey to sustainability within the confines of our own urban 1/4 acre. Hence the dawning of The Yarden where we practice urban yardening. Each growing season we are adding, changing, modifying and enhancing. Last summer we took over the front lawn for FOOD! In the fall we harvested over 100lbs of sweet potatoes of which we gave away plenty and just ate up the last of our stash!
Our projects include; organic veggies and native fruits, aquaponics, mushshroomery, square foot gardening, straw bale gardens, native perennials and yes, I even have a solar oven made from...
