Weekend Aug 10, 2012
Activity-icon-status

I'm motivated to pull out the old dehydrator this weekend and give it a go. I also plan on picking what will probably be the last "batch" of tomatoes.  Hopefully I will get some cleaning up done in the garden in prep for fall planting.  Speaking of fall - college football starts in 3 weeks - that really cuts into my gardening... ...see more

Boy we should all have stock in dehydrators!

Garden cleanup & canning Jul 30, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Spent Saturday doing garden clean-up ... removed the squash & pumpkin plants due to a squash bug invasion.  I picked what will probably be my last "load" of tomatoes as the plants are looking somewhat ragged but I can't complain ... I've had a better yield this year than any year.  Finished harvesting the onions & potatoes... ...see more

Sqush bugs and I are very old friends. I swear the chickens won't even eat them. I've been cleaning up and pulling back my mulch so the sun will run everthing I haven't squished or squashed will run off.  When is your first frost date?
Clenram replied 11 months ago
I have pulled all of my squash too do to the bug!

It was just easier to pull the plants than try to cut off the leaves with eggs on them.
So far behind ... Jul 26, 2012

What a week ... my sister-in-law passed away Sunday after a long battle with breast cancer.  Not unexpected but still many things to do.  Consequently, I'm behind in everything.  Hopefully I will catch up with you guys and the garden is not behind repair.

Eggplant adventure & tomato sorrow Jul 19, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Tonight I'm going to attempt eggplant puree in an effort to preserve my plentiful eggplant.  I will report success/failure and/or injuries.  Last night I went to the garden & more tomatoes were begging to be picked ... I somewhat whimsically thought "Oh joy".  Then I noticed that some of the tomato plants were looking... ...see more

I'm feeling the same way...busy, busy...not enough time!  good luck with the eggplant puree! how will you use it?

RoriTx replied 11 months ago
Eggplant puree.......I'm going to smile and pretend that sounds good to me :) I would like to know what are you going to do with it?
vanna516 replied 11 months ago

I tried to make the eggplant puree last Friday - seemed simple enough but somehow it didn't turn out quite right.  I was going to freeze it (I had asked for ways of freezing eggplant to preserve it... more »

Fall garden Jul 18, 2012
Activity-icon-status

I've gotten farther along in preparation for a fall garden - starting some seeds that my gardening partner-in-crime sent me.  Let's see if I can actually get them out into the garden when they germinate.  I, however, politely refused to seed the collards - I know that there are some excellent cooks here that could make it palatable... ...see more

Isn't that the truth.  I am glad for this site, but boy is it giving me "grand gardening" ideas.  I have never been so busy trying to harvest and plan another garden....  Crazy, but fun!  :)
