Another 100 degree day ... I've been busy but most of it was not gardening. We got a little rain Wednesday but last night got all the wind from a passing thunderstorm but no rain. I haven't assessed the damage to the garden yet.

We hit 102 this afternoon - now just waiting to see what we get out of the storms:   rain? wind? nothing?  Hoping there's no damage to the garden - I've been babying it through this heat, so it's... more »

I made one like that myself - but I dont have a nice stand like that with the rollers - good idea...  I just roll mine around the yard...  =)
RoriTx replied 11 months ago
I bet they used the same plans as Gary did. It's identical to the one he built for us except our rollers/base are on the ground-no legs. I don't really use it a whole lot. It just sits up by the garden.

How well does it work? My son made a similar one for me when we lived in Brazil, but I didn't find it to be very effective.

Is that a pumpkin?  What are you doing to make yours grow so well?  How long would you say it took to get to this size?
The pole beans aren't looking too good either. Jul 02, 2012

No rain, the furnace door open (HOT!!) & faulty tomato cages Jun 29, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Close your eyes and imagine (yes, you know where this is going - no pictures) my surprise when I discovered green tomatoes laying all over the ground as I was watering last night.  Two more tomato plants on the ground (apparently my tomato cages aren't bearing the weight well).  I sat down and lifted each one up, one in my... ...see more

Wow, sounds like quite the night!  I did some tomato staking last night, too - the heat wasn't exactly enjoyable, but I'd take it over the mosquitoes that just about ate me alive.  Thank goodness... more »

The weather just makes me more determined to bet the greenhouse built and start pushing the spring start time up as far as I can. We joke about this but watching something you started from nothing burn up is horribly depressing.

I did have two of my dwarf champion tomatoes commit hari kari - one just collapsed into the other (tomato cage and all). I assumed with the name "dwarf" I wouldn't working with a regular size tomato plant.
JMTKMS replied 11 months ago
I can feel your pain.  I have some dwarf peas that are out growing my non-dwarf peas.  Crazy.  So sorry for your tomatoes, can you pick them back up, or did they finish each other off?
vanna516 replied 11 months ago
I think I salvaged one plant by getting it upright - the stems are very thick and almost "brittle" if that makes any sense ... so the one guy that was flat one the ground will have to stay there - I'm afraid I'll break it.

I think that the heat has affected my motiviation - I haven't gotten anything much done except for watering the garden (think I had the same story last week). Hopefully something new tomorrow.
JMTKMS replied 11 months ago
I know the extreme heat does that to me too, but so far we have had more extreme cool than warm.  The next two weeks will be interesting, as they are to get in to the mid 80's and stay there.  I ... more »

Me, too!  Between the heat and being so far behind after the storms, I just don't know where to even begin!
