I'm doing it. I'm adding a hoop house to the top of my new raised bed. I think I can keep production of lettuce, peas, etc up to December.

I actually only started the peas to give my biology students an idea of what they look like when we studied Gregor Mendel's genetic experiments. I figured why waste them?

Well, Mr. Zucchini, where did you come from? I've seen lots of blloms over the last month, but I didn't even notice you there. Now you are 8 inches long. Better make some fried zucchini soon.

Still harvesting okra. Two plants is giving me enough for 2-3 people. My carrots are still growing, but slow. I threw in a few more a few weeks ago. 100 degrees again today? My pumkin vines are wilting!!
Groundskeeper replied 8 months ago
I think I've read that okra is an African plant (hibiscus family) which leads to the thought it doesn't mind heat. That was true here in Iowa, growing on a sandy patch. I had to water because the soil drai... (more)

It seemed like the okra really loved the heat until it became extreme (105 and above). Also, my soil was very dark, so the soil temps were also very high. When the temps dropped below 100, the plants really took off.
Groundskeeper replied 8 months ago
So, even okra has a limit! During your extreme heat did you also have clear days, meaning full sun? Under such conditions, the top few inches of soil, especially dark soil, have to get surprisingly hot. Di... (more)
