| Chicken Treadle and the End of Era of Rodents Sep 28, 2011 | ||

I love human ingenuity. I'm left gasping for air when contemplating the fact that mechanisms and inventions first must dance in the neurons of our brain before being manifest in our hands. And it really is a dance. A vast array of connections must arise to couple together quantified abstractions and experiential intuition.... ...see more

In gardening, there's always something new to learn or some obstacle to work around. Presently, I'm faced with pest problems. The other day I was watering and surveying the garden when I found damage to my corn and tomatoes. It appears some type of rodent (squirrel? rat? I don't know) has been munching down on my corn and low... ...see more
| Harvest Update Aug 21, 2011 | ||
|
|
After returning from my Lost Coast hiking trip, I was delighted to find a number of plants ready to harvest. To begin, many of the Amaranth plants have passed their prime; I've collected the grain for future plantings and used the fibrous stocks to start another compost pile. In their place, I plan to plant onions for the fall... ...see more

|
On July 23rd, I attended an introductory course on the Biointensive Method as developed by John Jeavons and reported in his book, "How to Grow More Vegetables (than you ever thought possible on less land than you can imagine)." I had a working knowledge of this gardening method from reading his books and website, ... ...see more
| Tomato Update Aug 19, 2011 | ||

I have always marveled at the growth of indeterminate tomato plants. This year, I decided early on to devote one of the newest planting beds entirely to tomatoes. To provide a history of the soil, up until a year ago, the brick planter in the front of our house (measuring approximately 22' by 2.5') was devoted solely to random... ...see more
| I spoke too soon. It appears the purple coloring is starting to spread to adjacent plants. Could this be some sort of virus? Any input would be helpful. |
| Potato Harvest! Jul 22, 2011 | ||

|
Well, I have very exciting news! The other day I was watering the garden and I noticed a potato was growing up out of the mulch in my potato patch. I quickly covered it with additional straw as I worried the crop might start to green with sun exposure (which leads to excess solanine production in the tubers; solanine being a... ...see more

Today, I sowed a portion of my veggies for the fall harvest; among these, I planted: Vates Dwarf Blue Kale; Red Russian Kale; Red Acre Cabbage; an Heirloom Golden Beet; and Ambassador Snap Peas. I'm also planning on planting several varieties of carrots and additional red beets, but I have to wait until there's more space freed... ...see more
| Garden Harvest on 07/15/11 Jul 15, 2011 | ||

|
Today, I harvested several portions of brassicas, including some Di Cicco and Romanesco Broccoli, as well as a bunch of garlic and a giant heirloom beet. I've always been a sucker for giant vegetables despite their less than ideal flavors upon ballooning to enormous sizes. I'm a particular fan of watching Romanesco grow and develop.... ...see more
As an update, I oven roasted the 4 lbs. of garlic together with the mangel beet in olive oil at 375 degrees F. I removed the garlic after about 45 minutes, while the beet took upwards of 80 minutes. The ga... more » |
